Red Velvet Cupcakery claims that their cupcakes “seduce you from the first bite to the last crumb.” This Chinatown bakery is a hole in the wall that serves a rotating menu of cupcakes. I ended up here with my roommates after the Nationals game we were supposed to see got rained out. Unfortunately, the bakery doesn’t have any seating and the weather wasn’t conducive to walking around while enjoying a cupcake. Customers, however, are allowed to sit at Tangy Sweet, the froyo shop next door.
I tried the Southern Belle ($3.25), the namesake flavor. My first bite was only of the cake, and I was disappointed that it tasted no better than something made out of a Betty Crocker box. The cream cheese frosting, on the other hand, was great. The texture was smooth and thin, like whipped butter, and the flavor was rich but not overwhelming. The flavor of the icing covered up the mediocrity of the cake. Although I have no practical use for it, I was pleased to find out that you can buy icing by the pound.
All three of my roommates got the Peanut Butter Cup cupcake ($3.25) and gave it mixed reviews. The cake is double chocolate, while the frosting is peanut butter flavored. One roommate gave the cupcake a 10 out of 10, while the other two thought the cake part could have been better.
You can’t really eat a cupcake in DC without comparing it to the other cupcakes you’ve tried throughout the city. Red Velvet Cupcakery’s cupcakes themselves reminded me of Georgetown Cupcakes because of their size and the quality and texture of the frosting. I must say that overall, Georgetown Cupcakes serves a better cupcake because the cake is equally as delicious as the frosting. The price of these cupcakes was also a bit pricy compared to other bakeries. Georgetown Cupcakes charges $2.75 for their sweets, which are the same size as those at Red Velvet, where they cost $3.25. Cupcakes atbaked & wired cost $3.50, but are much bigger and taste more homemade than those at Red Velvet. It’s been way too long since I’ve had a cupcake at Sprinkles to be able to compare, but the display at Red Velvet was similar to that at Sprinkles.
