The Anvil Restaurant – Harpers Ferry, WV Review
The Anvil is located just up the street from the Canal House Cafe, which I recently reviewed. These were the only two restaurants (besides a pizza parlor) that were within walking distance of my B&B, which was located in Harper Ferry’s upper town. Compared to the Canal House, the Anvil was bigger and seemed more formal. The tables were covered in white tablecloths and had carved, wooden chairs. The Anvil had a bar and even a casino room!
The French Onion Soup au Gratin ($5) was really disappointing. It was just bland and had no flavor. Booooo.
My boyfriend got the Maryland Style Crab Soup ($5). He says it was good, but he expected better. It didn’t have as much seafood in it as he thought it would.
After my disappointing soup, I had very, very low expectations for my entree. To my surprise, it was incredibly delicious!! I ordered the Pasta Garlic ($15), a seemingly simple dish consisting of roasted garlic, tomatoes, basil leaves, cream and parmesan. Even though I wasn’t very hungry coming into the restaurant, I practically licked my plate clean! The dominant flavor was definitely garlic, but it was balanced by a creamy sauce and fresh tomatoes and basil. The pasta was simple but so good! I’d definitely come back to the Anvil just for this dish.
Unfortunately, my boyfriend’s entree was just as disappointing as the soups. He ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($11), which came with fries and a pickle. The chicken patty was pathetically small. He says the sandwich was very average, but the fries were good. The fries were thin, almost shoestring-like, and were addicting. They were especially useful when it came to scooping up the last bits of my pasta sauce.
I was pleased with the service at the Anvil. It was good and professional.
The Anvil has some pretty low ratings on Zomato. Considering that 3 of the 4 dishes we ordered were pretty mediocre (and most of the menu came at D.C.-high prices), this is understandable. However, I really can’t get over how good the pasta garlic was, so the Anvil remains a positive experience in my memory.
