I just wanted to post a quick shout-out to my favorite cupcake place in Georgetown – baked & wired.This favorite local spot offers unique flavors, fresh cupcakes and other baked goodies and a funky atmosphere.

Here are some highlights from their cupcake menu online:

  • Flapjack: maple brown butter cupcake with caramel buttercream and candied bacon on top (bacon optional)
  • Tessita: Vanilla Cake with dulce de leche filling and chocolate-hazelnut satin icing <– (that means a Nutella-ey frosting!!)
  • Dirty Chai Tea Latte:  Vanilla cake blended with chai spices and topped with espresso buttercream frosting

I usually get the Tessita (it’s so indulgent; I definitely recommend it), but I was feeling more adventurous so I went for the Elvis Impersonator, AKA the (Un)porked Elvis ($3.50). This was a banana cupcake with peanut butter frosting and chocolate drizzle.

I opted to try the “porked” version and got candied bacon on the side. I was skeptical about the bacon, but somehow, it just works! The cupcake is so sweet that the bacon adds a nice salty-sweet kick.

The banana cake was super moist and fresh and the peanut butter frosting was the perfect complement. I recommend eating baked & wired’s cupcakes with a fork – like a real cake – because they’re pretty big and can get very messy!

I prefer baked & wired over the other two main Georgetown cupcakeries, Sprinkles and Georgetown Cupcakes because it isn’t a chain, like Sprinkles, and it’s unknown to tourists so the line doesn’t go outside the store like it does at Georgetown Cupcakes (that’s what having a reality show tends to do…).

Baked & wired is tucked away on Thomas Jefferson St. between 30th and 31st streets in Georgetown. The small alley-like street is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of M Street and the C&O Canal passes through it.

The cafe features a drink bar opposite the baked goods counter, making it ideal for bringing your schoolwork, getting a drink and a treat and occupying one of their couches for a few hours. One of baked & wired’s downfalls, however, is that it doesn’t have wifi, but this does not deter Georgetown and GW students from lingering.

Baked & wired has artwork hanging up all over its walls, some (if not all) of which you can purchase. A corner in the back room also has customer’s napkin art hanging along the wall. It’s a great atmosphere for inspiration, hitting the books or catching up with a friend.
