Buzz Bakery Ballston Review

I know all my recent posts have been about cupcakes, but they’re ubiquitous in the DMV and thus hard to avoid. And they look so good – ESPECIALLY these.

Buzz Bakery has two locations in Virginia – Arlington and Alexandria. I went to the Arlington location. It’s easily accessible on the orange line. Get off at the Virginia Square stop or the Ballston stop, both are fairly equidistant from Buzz.

Buzz is the kind of place you want to linger in for hours. The cafe is decorated in pink, orange and green, with artwork, fake grass and cool lanterns hanging on the wall and from the ceiling. Buzz has couches and coffee tables, long tables and chairs and bar stool seating options. The atmosphere is cheerful and welcoming.

I was mesmerized by how cute Buzz’s cupcakes looked. I actually chose the cupcake I ended up getting solely by its appearance. I usually go for chocolatey cupcakes, but this time I went for something fruity.

The Katy Perry cupcake is aptly named after the pop star known for cherry chapstick, glitter and over-the-top, food-inspired outfits. It’s a vanilla cupcake with cherry curd filling, buttercream frosting and a “disco” cherry (aka a fabulously glitter-covered maraschino cherry).

The frosting was buttery and delicious, but something left a strange taste in my mouth. If I had to guess, I’d say it was either the blue sprinkles or the neon pink food coloring. The cherry curd center had a maraschino cherry taste, but was more sour than sweet. The cake was sweet on its own. The individual parts of the cupcake separately weren’t fantastic, but that’s the beauty of cupcakes: all of the parts eaten together work well.

I also tried the Magic Bar, which was made with coconut, chocolate and cranberries. It was simply incredible… perhaps even *magical* as the name suggests. It was divinely chewy and each bite was very flavorful. JUST GO TRY IT!
