D.P. Dough College Park Review

A late-night drive recently led me to a midnight snack at College Park’s D.P. Dough, a calzone parlor beloved by UMD Terps. D.P. Dough is a calzone franchise that has locations around the country, namely in college towns. With its crazy late hours and affordable cheesy calzones, I understand why it’s attractive to college students. Can one of these please come to GW?

D.P. Dough looks like a pizza parlor, but all it serves is calzones. The menu include D.P. Dough classics like the Buffer “Zone” (breaded chicken, mozzarella, hot sauce and bleu cheese), chicken calzones, steak calzones, meaty calzones, veggie calzones, and College Park Zones, which are University of Maryland themed. You can also customize your own calzone in the “Construction Zone” (I love these puns!).

Each day, D.P. Dough has a calzone of the day, which is only $5 (called the $5 Zone). This daily special is advertised on a chalkboard wall, which patrons can decorate. As you can imagine, there were plenty of self-promotions and phone numbers on the wall (see below).

For my midnight snack, I ordered the $5 Pesto Zone (usually $6.95). The calzone was filled with pesto sauce, mozzarella and tomatoes. After a several minute wait (they get really busy with deliveries at night), I got a piping-hot calzone and a side of marinara sauce. The calzone was a perfect snack. It was cheesy, but not overwhelmingly so. The pesto went nicely dipped in the marinara sauce. I thought that the tomatoes that were supposed to be inside the calzone would just be tomato sauce, but they were indeed tomato chunks. Overall, I was impressed with my calzone. It could have been a really greasy meal, but instead it was balanced. The calzone was big enough for a two-person snack, or a one-person meal.

There were several calzones on the menu that looked interesting and that I would try on future visits. These include: Maui Wowi Zone (pineapple, ham, mozzarella), Mac Daddy Zone (mac and cheese, bacon, cheddar), and the Falling Rock Zone (tater tots, bacon, cheddar, mozzarella, side of sour cream). The Falling Rock reminds me of a breakfast pita they have at Pita Pit, one of my fast food guilty pleasure at GW. They should definitely make breakfast calzones!

The “restaurant” doesn’t have seating, except for a few benches along the windows. It’s really a take out and delivery place. When I was there on a Friday night, endless groups of college kids came in and out to pick up calzones, or eat them inside. A night out in College Park isn’t complete without a visit to D.P. Dough.

The Bottom Line:

Food: 3.5/5

Ambiance: 3/5
