The Grill From Ipanema – Adams Morgan: DC Restaurant Week

This post is now a bit belated, but I went to the Grill From Ipanema for DC Restaurant Week. I am sad to say that it did not meet my expectations or those of my boyfriend, who said the experience was like “hopping on a plane to Rio de Janiero that doesn’t take off and going home disappointed.”

The restaurant week menu offered a three-course dinner for about $35. We started with the Coxina de Galinha and Abacate Maraja.

The Coxina de Galinha (pictured above) were breaded croquettes stuffed with chicken and cheese. The croquettes were probably the highlight of my meal. They were warm and chewy… and anything stuffed with cheese is good by me. The sauce they were served with ruined the taste of the croquettes, so I avoided it at all costs.

The Abacate Maraja was basically a stuffed avocado half served on a bed of lettuce. I’m still not sure whether there was actually any avocado inside the avocado skin because its contents left much to be desired. The avocado was filled with a cold shrimp salad made of minced tomatoes, onions and peppers.

For my entree I went with the Massa a Cabo Frio, a pasta dish with chicken, capers, tomatoes and onions in a creamy, white sauce. I had high expectations and was disappointed. The dish didn’t taste bad, it was just mediocre. As my boyfriend said, it was “glorified airplane food.” However, I will say that the chicken was very soft and tender in the best way possible.

The serving size was mammoth, so I ended up taking most of it home with me. It wasn’t until it was in my fridge that I realized that the dish reeked of garlic. I love garlic, but this was just too much!

After a disappointing entree, I was ready for dessert. It was the first thing I decided upon when getting the menu and was thus super excited, just to be let down once again.

I ordered Brazilian cheesecake covered in guava sauce. It was closer to a custard than American cheesecake. I liked the guava sauce initially, but the texture was gritty and after time the taste became bitter. The sauce actually reminded me of rose-hip jam, which I love and is a Serbian staple.

My boyfriend got the flan. We both found it mediocre. It just didn’t compare to the cheap flan my mom makes from a box. This flan lacked flavor.

The Grill From Ipanema was pretty disappointing. I want to try more Brazilian food, but not here. Maybe I just ordered every bad thing off the menu… maybe I should’ve had Ramen.

Ne uopšte! To je bio pravi američki cheesecake ali je imao čudan ukus… Ovaj je bio više kao flan
