The promise of $5 pizzas brought my friends and me to Jack-Tar. From 5-7 p.m. every day, Jack-Tar offers four pizzas from their menu for only $5 each! When I heard this, I thought we were going to a dingy pizza parlor with mediocre pizza. That was not the case at all!!
Jack-Tar is located in the heart of downtown Marblehead, a seaside town predating the United States. The historic town was preparing for the 4th of July by displaying its stars and stripes. My friends and I got to enjoy the patriotic atmosphere, the summer weather and our food from Jack-Tar’s garden patio, which makes up the majority of the restaurant’s seating.
Our party of four ordered two pizzas (they’re about 12 inches in diameter) and one salad and it was the perfect amount of food. I’m going to describe our pizza first (and then come back to the appetizer) because it was just phenomenal!
The Margarita was a classic pizza with fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella. I usually prefer pizzas with more toppings because most times, simple can be boring. This pizza, however, was absolutely fantastic!! It was hot out of the oven and the ingredients were so incredibly flavorful!
The BBQ Chicken pizza was also amazing! It was topped with chicken, caramelized onions, tomatoes and cilantro. The onions made this pizza. They were caramelized to sweet perfection!
If I lived in Marblehead, I’d try to come here every night for this pizza. I can honestly say that I’ve never had a pizza experience this memorable, and I’ve been to Italy. I think I can even say that this is the best pizza I’ve ever had. Not only was the flavor amazing, but the pizzas were also only $5 each!! It really doesn’t get any better than this. I’m now on the pursuit of a comparable pizza place in DC.
And now for a review of the less memorable Jack Tar Salad ($8). I apologize for the blurriness of the photo… I didn’t realize it was out of focus! Anyway, the house salad consisted of various greens with grilled asparagus, tomatoes, almond slivers, goat cheese and a citrus vinaigrette. I’m not a fan of citrus flavor in anything except my water, so I thought the dressing was too lemony. The grilled asparagus was great; it had a nice smoky flavor. The goat cheese had a soft texture and a mild flavor, while the tomatoes added a hint of sweetness.
The food – a.k.a the pizza – here was FANTASTIC! Our party of four enjoyed an incredible meal at this sit-down restaurant for only $6 per person (tip included). Jack Tar’s pizza happy hour is an amazingly delicious deal you can’t afford to miss.
