Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe Brunch Review – Dupont Circle

Kramerbooks is a unique DC establishment. This bookstore and restaurant is a favorite of both locals and tourists. From New York Times bestsellers to outrageous cheesecakes, Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe have it all! Enter on Connecticut Avenue to browse the books, and then make your way to the back and through the kitchen area to be seated for a meal. Otherwise, you can enter on 19th Street directly into the restaurant.

I first came here during CI – GW’s summer camp of an orientation – for a midnight snack. The restaurant and bookshop are open until 1 a.m. every night, except on Fridays and Saturdays, when they stay open for 24 hours. The menu offers a variety of cakes and desserts that make Kramerbooks the perfect pit stop after a long night exploring the city.

Most recently, I came to Kramerbooks with my friend Brian for brunch. The meal begins with plates of fruit and pastries. The idea sounds luxurious, but the execution is mediocre. I was, however, thankful to have food in front of me immediately because I was super hungry!!

kramerbooks and afterwords cafe brunch reviewI ordered the Cafe Veggie Hash ($15.75 + $2 for bacon), which consisted of a medley of sauteed veggies (turnips, parsnips, rutabaga, butternut squash, asparagus, carrots, red peppers and onions) topped with two eggs any style and hollandaise sauce. It was served with potatoes and toast. The vegetables were colorful and cooked at a good consistency. I really liked the variety. The dish was super filling, so I could only get through half of it. Although the hash was very good, the meal was pricier than something I could get at a comparable restaurant.

Both the restaurant and bookstore are popular at most times during the day. The restaurant gets pretty busy and the most favorable seats, outside or by the windows, fill up quickly.

Overall, the food was good, but the prices were a bit inflated relative to similar restaurants.
