Max Brenner Chocolate Bar – Bethesda, MD

max brenner bethesda review

Max Brenner’s menu is a work of art that I have been salivating over for months. You can have chocolate fondue, hot chocolate, virgin “choctails,” chocolate cake, chocolate pizza, chocolate-covered Belgian waffles, chocolate crepes, and even elephant-sized syringes filled with liquid chocolate. I was worried that Max Brenner would be too good to be true, and that the dishes would be less about quality and more about presentation. However, I am thrilled to report that Max Brenner lived up to my expectations.

While there are several Max Brenner locations around the world that serve both meals and desserts, the Bethesda one is exclusively a chocolate bar. I like the idea of going somewhere for just dessert because it reminds me of Belgrade, which is full of pastry shops. However, if Max Brenner wants to open a new store, I am totally okay with it opening in Belgrade.

Open face s’more

I tried the Urban S’mores ($17.95), which were a luxurious and updated take on a childhood favorite. The dessert came with all of the tools necessary for toasting marshmallows, including a fire that was a bit frightening at times. The toppings for the s’mores were toffeed bananas, raspberry jam, peanut butter and the creme-de-la-creme: liquid chocolate ganache. The chocolate was absolutely AMAZING and made the dish. It tasted like melted milk chocolate Lindt truffles. The caramelized bananas were also delicious, but the serving size was scant for the $18 price. I made my s’mores with everything except the peanut butter, because I’m a Nutella girl. I think raspberries are a luxurious fruit, so the jam was a decadent touch. The s’mores were truly delicious. The serving was enough for two people, but for the price, we definitely could have given us some more.

Toasting marshmallows

The Mexican Spicy Hot Chocolate ($5.95) was unique. It was “spiked” with chili, cinnamon, nutmeg and pepper and served in one of Max Brenner’s signature Hug Mugs. The mugs are ergonomically designed so you can cradle them in your hands (a la Twilight).

The hot chocolate was bitter when you drank it and then had a spicy after taste.

Mexican Hot Chocolate

I would definitely go back to Max Brenner because Bethesda is my new favorite place and the chocolate was amazing. Next time I’d like to try the Strawberry White Chocolate Smoothie and the Popsicle Fondue. The goal is to eventually try everything on the menu!
