BTR NYC: Pastis – Meatpacking District

Upon beginning to write this review, I found out that Pastis is currently closed for renovations (I was there in December). However, the owners plan to re-open as soon as possible, so feel free to drool over my words and photos in Pastis’ absence.

This French restaurant was made famous by Sex and the City. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen the show, so I don’t have much else to add on that topic.

I went to Pastis for brunch around Christmas. The restaurant was outfitted in its holiday regalia: evergreen tinsel, lights and red ribbons.

The restaurant looks very much like what I think a typical French establishment looks like. The tables are tiny and packed  the menu is written on large mirrors that line the walls.

I started my meal with a Chocolate Chaud ($4.25), or hot chocolate for you non-French speakers. It was frothy and bitter. It was not my favorite hot chocolate, and it definitely wasn’t worth the price. However, I discovered that Pastis is both overpriced and overrated.

For my entree, I got the Omelette aux Fine Herbes with French Fries ($14) a.k.a. an omelet with herbs. The omelet was absolutely enormous (I’m guessing 4 or 5 eggs) but it was nothing special. It was really plain and unsatisfying. The fries were burnt but addicting. I probably kept munching on them  to overcompensate for the mediocre omelet.

The Scrambled Eggs with Norwegian Smoked Salmon ($18) was a bit better because there was a wider range of flavors on the plate. The home fries were buttery and there was too much salmon on the dish.

The best part of my meal was the simplest. I slathered the toast I got with my omelet with butter and Bonne Maman wild blueberry jam. It was delicious and a great end to my disappointing meal.

I really wanted Pastis to be great, but the quality of the food just didn’t match the amount of praise the restaurant gets. First of all, the food was mediocre. Second, I did not like the atmosphere. Pastis was crowded and loud (although I did appreciate the abundance of foreign languages being spoken by guests). I had a really hard time getting into my table, and I’m not overweight. My table was squeezed in between two others, so in order to get in or out, I had to push my whole table back several feet and then squeeze past the table next to me while trying not to rub my bottom on their omelets. In conclusion, Pastis is overrated, overcrowded and overpriced.
