BTR Maui: Sarento’s on the Beach – Kihei

sarentos maui review

When you’re on vacation in Hawaii, what makes the ideal breakfast spot? Great food and an ocean view. That’s exactly what Sarento’s on the Beach provides.

My view from breakfast

This restaurant is pretty much outside, except for the roof overhead to protect from the elements. This was the first breakfast I ate after arriving in Hawaii, so I hadn’t been to the beach yet. While waiting for my food, I got the same feeling of excitement for the beach as I would get when my car would be pulling into the parking lot of Chuck E. Cheese’s when I was little.

Because I was in Hawaii, I got myself guava juice. Yum. For my meal, I ordered the French Crepes ($14), which were served with fresh berries, Tahitian vanilla bean pastry cream and champagne-peach sauce. The champagne-peach sauce tastes as good as it sounds. The vanilla cream mixed with the fruit reminded me of berries and cream, one of my favorite British desserts. I liked that the crepe came with several different fruits: bananas, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. The dish tasted amazing, but it was not very filling. According to the menu, I ordered French Crepes, plural, but I only got one crepe. The dish could be improved with the addition of another crepe. Other than that, it was delicious and one of the best breakfast dishes I’ve had.

I managed to steal a bite of the Caprese Omelet ($14), which came with fresh mozzarella, roma tomatoes, Maui onions and basil. The flavor of this omelet was incomparable to any other omelets I’ve had. It was savory and filling, like a pizza or a steak. Yum. The dish also came with toast and jam made from some kind of local fruit. It was slightly tart and definitely worth a try.

The food at Sarento’s was noteworthy, but it took an incredibly long time to come out of the kitchen. I suppose that quality dishes take time to prepare, but unless they were picking the berries for my crepe from their garden or harvesting eggs from their chickens, there was no reason to wait so long for a meal.

In conclusion, the food and location get an A+, but the wait time has room for improvement.
